  • Experimental Methods in Atomic & Molecular Physics (SS 20)

    The course 'Experimental Methods in Atomic & Molecular Physics' will cover advanced experimental laser methods for the investigation of fundamental properties of quantum systems. Topics will include preparation and cooling of atomic, molecular and ionic species, cold quantum gases, studies of ultrashort quantum dynamics and fundamental physics with precision methods. We will proceed from the most basic methods in use to modern advanced techniques. In the exercises, the participants will analyze seminal and current publications from the point of view of the experimental methodology in order to gain an understanding of how to conceive, design and perform laboratory work in this field. The course (4 CP) will be evaluated based on the weekly problem sets. The sheets will be discussed weekly, and they should delivered by email (crespojr@mpi-hd.mpg.de) before the beginning of the lecture. Participants are expected to send in at least 70% of the assignments, with 40% (from the total) adequately correct responses, and to lead the discussion of at least one partial task (of one sheet) in the video session for a passing grade.
