Diese Vorlesung ist der erste Teil des WP Astro Moduls "Einführung in die Astronomie und Astrophysik", das aus 2 Semestern Vorlesung mit Übungen besteht, und einem Praktikum.

Es geht um das physikalische Verständnis unseres Universum jenseits der Erde: 
-- wie erforscht man das Universum?
-- wie kommt man von Beobachtungen zu einem physikalischen Verständnis?
-- Was sind die grundlegenden Erkentnisse, vom Sonnensystem zum Urknall?

Im ersten Semester (WS) werden folgende Themenkreise behandeln:
— eine kurze Reise durch den Kosmos: erster Überblick
— Astronomische Grundlagen : astronomische Beobachtung;
     elektromagnetische Strahlung; Entfernungsmessung; Sonnensystem 
— Physik der Sterne: Sternaufbau und Energieerzeugung

In this astrophysics lecture we cover the theoretical concepts of how planets and planetary systems are thought to form. This includes the planets in our solar system as well as exoplanets. The journey starts with the formation of a star, surrounded by a disk of gas and cosmic dust: the protoplanetary disk. This disk is the environment in which (and contains the matter from which) planets form. We will therefore discuss in quite some depth the structure, dynamics, thermodynamics and chemistry of these disks, including radiative transfer, hydrodynamics, magnetohydrodynamics, etc. And we will discuss the wealth of observations of these disks that have been obtained, in particular in the last decade, with the VLT and Subaru telescopes, with ALMA, and with several space-borne telescopes such as JWST. We will then move on to discuss the richness of physical phenomena that underpin the long journey from micrometer-sized dust (=rock) particles all the way to many-thousand kilometer sized planets. These include, among other things: gas turbulence, dust particle drift, coagulation and fragmentation of dust aggregates, formation of planetesimals through streaming instability, restricted three-body problem, dynamical friction, pebble accretion, planetary migration, planetary collisions, N-body dynamics, gas accretion, (pebble-)isolation mass, planetary interiors, equations of state at high pressures and temperatures, phase diagrams of rocks, magma oceans, clues from the Solar system (meteoritic evidence, planetary orbits, etc), and many more.

This course provides a firm understanding of the theoretical concepts
of astrophysics, together with their assumptions and limitations. Topics covered include:
-- Hydrodynamics: Basics and equations of motion; ideal and viscous fluids and currents; sound waves, supersonic currents and shock waves; instabilities, convection and turbulence
-- Plasma physics: Basics of collision-less plasmas; dielectric tensor; dispersion relation, longitudinal waves and Landau damping; magnetohydrodynamic equations; waves in magnetized plasmas; hydrodynamic waves
-- Radiative processes: Macroscopic radiation measurements; emission, absorption and scattering, radiative transfer; Bremsstrahlung and synchrotron radiation; ionization and recombination; spectra

Upon completion of the lecture, students are able to apply this knowledge to a wide range of different areas of modern astrophysics and can solve complex problems in this field. They are familiar with concepts from different areas of theoretical physics relevant for astrophysics and they can apply mathematical techniques for solving questions arising in astrophysical situations.

The lectures will introduce the foundations of modern cosmology. Topics include the basics of General Relativity, the modeling of a homogeneous and isotropic universe, dark matter, the cosmological constant and dark energy, cosmic inflation, and the thermal history of the universe, including cosmological nucleosynthesis and the cosmic microwave background. We will also study cosmic structure formation in both the linear and non-linear regimes. After establishing the theoretical framework, the course will explore the key observational evidence that underpins our current understanding of the universe.

The lecture is equivalent to the bachelor module parts WPAstro.1+2 during the winter and summer terms but requires a slightly higher level of basic physical knowledge. 


Nevertheless also motivated 3rd semester BSc students are welcome to participate. 
This lecture is organised as a block course with 2 parts from Sep. 22 - Oct. 19th, 2024. 

Certificates are only given for active participation in the exercises (meaning also being present at all exercises) and passing the written examination.

Homework should/can be done in groups of 2(3)

As most of the radiation we receive from galaxies is star light, we can use it to measure and study their properties. These lectures aim at showing how much we can learn about galaxy evolution from the study of stellar populations in galaxies (young to old stellar clusters, field stars, resolved and integrated stellar populations). We will review the methods commonly used in this respect, all resting on our understanding of stellar evolution, and discuss the results obtained when we apply them to observational data, such as multi-wavelength photometry and spectroscopy.

Stellar structure, evolution and explosions, including practical tutorials based on the MESA stellar evolution code. 

In the first half of the term, teaching will be via classical blackboard-style lectures that lay the foundation of stellar evolution. In contrast to classical lectures on stellar astrophysics, the second half is a practical course where students employ the stellar evolution code MESA to study the evolution and final fates of low-, intermediate- and high-mass stars. This allows us to follow the evolution of stars interactively, enabling us to investigate stellar structures in great detail. For the practical part, a laptop is required (all operating systems are supported).

In this class, we will discuss the basics of asteroseismology. After some more theoretical introduction, each student will analyse a star for its asteroseismic signal and deduce stellar parameters. We end with a journal club.

This is a five day block course with lectures in the morning and practical hands-on exercises in the afternoon. We will learn the basic technique to use GPU (graphical processing units, graphics cards) for numerical accelerated computing at the example of CUDA - an extension of the C programming language, which is used for the NVIDIA GPU accelerated supercomputer to be used in our course. More general approaches for other systems will be discussed. Concepts of parallel programming are introduced. GPU accelerated parallel computing is a technique, which is now widely used in computational physics and astrophysics. Many supercomputers of EuroHPC Petascale systems use GPU.
Topics: Parallel Computing, GPU Hardware, Elements of CUDA Language, Data Transfer, Vector and Matrix Operations, Simple Application for N-Body Problem.

They will run some of the main scripts and codes to model compact object formation (population synthesis codes, direct N-body codes, semi-analytic codes, simplified LIGO-Virgo data analysis scripts).

Der dreiwöchige Blockkurs zur Einführung in die Astronomie (PASTRO) für Lehramtstudierende der Physik an Gymnasien an der Universität Heidelberg wird am Haus der Astronomie durchgeführt (zu erreichen mit den Buslinien 30 und 39 oder mit der Bergbahn). Er findet immer im Wintersemester in der vorlesungsfreien Zeit im Februar oder März jeweils von 9:30-12:30 Uhr statt. 

Behandelte Themen sind: Größenordnungen des Kosmos, Himmelsmechanik und Orientierung am Sternhimmel, Teleskoptechnik und Spektroskopie, das Sonnensystem, die Sonne, Sterne, Exoplaneten, die Milchstraße und andere Galaxien und Kosmologie.

Astronomical and cosmological observations require the existence of dark matter in our universe. Today, Dark Matter is generally thought to have particle nature, where the dark matter particles have relatively long lifetimes, interact gravitationally and, possibly, also via the weak interaction.

In the Standard Model of particle physics, only neutrinos have the correct properties, but, due to their small mass, neutrinos can only account for a small fraction of the observed Dark Matter in our universe. In extended versions of the standard model sterile neutrinos, in particular keV-sterile neutrinos can contribute as warm dark matter candidates.

Light supersymmetric particles are an example for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) which are candidates for cold darm matter. Other viable dark matter candidates are axions, which have been introduced to solve the strong CP-problem of QCD, or axion-like particles.

The seminar will address the astrophysical and cosmological evidences which led to the postulation of dark matter. It will discuss the most prominent dark matter candidates and the different direct and indirect methods to search for their existence. Particular emphasis is put on the determination of neutrino masses, the search for sterile neutrinos, WIMPS and axions.

Wissenschaftliches Schreiben ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil der Forschungsarbeit: Ergebnisse sollen klar und verständlich, dabei knapp und auf das Wesentliche konzentriert sein.

In dieser Arbeitsgemeinschaft werden Grundlagen des wissenschaftlichen Schreibens vermittelt, die anhand eines selbst verfassten Textes geübt und umgesetzt werden. Das Ziel des Seminars ist ein fertiger Artikel, der in der Studierendenzeitschrift Phoebe (https://phoebe.pubpub.org/) veröffentlicht wird. Das Thema dieses Artikels kann          innerhalb des Themenbereichs Quantenphysik frei gewählt werden. Seine Grundlage soll eine wissenschaftliche Fragestellung sein, die aus theoretischer und/oder experimenteller Sicht behandelt wird.

Abhängig von der Anzahl der Studierenden im Seminar können die Artikel alleine oder zu mehreren geschrieben werden. Es werden nur Artikel benotet, die am Ende des Seminars in der Studierendenzeitschrift Phoebe veröffentlicht werden.
