Lecture and tutorials
This course takes place on Tuesday and Thursday in the time from 14h to 16h in HS1 of INF 227.
The tutorials are held in the CIP Pool on INF 227 (room 1.401), Wednesday 11h to 13h, Thursday 11h to 13h, and Friday 11h to 13h. Further details will be discussed in the first lecture.
Final exam
Requirement for participating in the exam and further details will be discussed during the lecture. Specific dates and times will be announced in December.
Lecture content
• Basic concepts of numerical simulations, continuous and discrete simulations
• Discretization of ordinary differential equations, integration schemes of different order
• N-body problems
• Discretization of partial differential equations
• Finite element and finite volume methods
• Lattice methods
• Adaptive mesh refinement and multi-grid methods
• Matrix solvers and FFT methods
• Monte Carlo methods, Markov chains, applications in statistical physics
Credit points and workload
The workload of this master core course is 240 hours, corresponding to 8 credit points.
Script
Lecture notes will be provided from this webpage as the lecture progresses. It is based on the script of the past semesters.
Lehrinhalt
- Basic concepts of numerical simulations, continuous and discrete simulations - Discretization or ordinary differential equations, integration schemes of different order - N-Body problems, molecular dynamics, collisionless systems - Discretization of partial differential equations - Finite element and finite volume methods - Lattice methods - Adaptive mesh refinement and multi-grid methods - Matrix solvers and FFT methods - Monte Carlo methods, Markov Chains, applications in statistical physics
Voraussetzungen
No prior knowledge required apart from basic physics. However, some experience with computer programming and the use plotting software is assumed. As a tip: the course "Python for Scientists", offered on a regular basis by the physics and astronomy department, would be an excellent basis for this course (but not a prerequisite).
Lehrziel
After completion of this module, the students are endowed with the capacity to identify and classify numerical problems. They have reached active understanding of applicable numerical methods and algorithms. They are able to solve basic physical problems with adequate numerical techniques and to recognize the range of validity of numerical solutions.
