The lecture "Experimental Methods in Astroparticle Physics - II" is focused on two major topics:

- the existence of Dark Matter and methods used to detect and characterize its properties

- neutrinos and their properties 

To properly follow the topics discussed in the lecture it is required to have attended the PEP IV Lecture (or equivalent lecture providing basic knowledge of Particle and Nuclear Physics as well as interactions of particles with matter).

The lecture will start on Monday the 15th of April and end on the 22nd of July. Tutorials will start the week later.

The number of credit points related to this lecture is 4 and will be obtained on the basis of the submitted solutions to the exercises.

60% of corrected exercises are required to obtain the 4 credit points

During the first lecture we will also discuss possible time conflict with the proposed tutorial time.

Seminar für Bachelor-Studierende (PSem) 

Termin: Freitags, 11:00 -13:00

In diesem Seminar wollen wir Schlüsselexperimente besprechen, die unser heutiges Bild der Elementarteilchenphysik und insbesondere das Standardmodell der Elementarteilchlchenphysik geprägt haben. Die Experimente reichen von der Entdeckung des Myon-Neutrinos bis zur Entdeckung des Higgs-Bosons durch die ATLAS und CMS Kollaborationen in 2012 und die aktuellen Messungen zur Bestimmung der Neutrino-Masse durch die KATRIN-Kollaboration aus dem Jahr 2021.

Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme ist die erfolgreiche Teilnahme an der PEP4.

Einführende Literatur zu den Themen finden Sie auf der Homepage des Seminars. 3-4 Wochen vor Ihrem Termin wird eine Vorbesprechung mit dem Betreuer durchgeführt. Bitte kontaktieren Sie Ihren Betreuer rechtzeitig, um einen Termin hierfür auszumachen. Circa eine Woche vor dem Vortrag im Seminar sollten Sie einen Probevortrag bei ihrem Betreuer halten.

The topic of the seminar are precision measurements in particle physics. Find below a list of possible topics. If you are interested in one of them and like to give your presentation at an early date in the semester, you can contact us at any time during the semester break. Topics are distributed on first come first serve basis. Other topics are wellcome. Feel free to send us proposals (should not be related to you bachelor thesis or early seminiar talk you gave).

Prerequisits and Conditions

• You have followed the Particle Physics lecture
• For the preparation of your talk, search of suitable material (papers etc.). In case you have questions please contact your superviser.
• Latest 3 weeks before your talk you arrange for a meeting with your supervisor to discuss the material, at this time you should have already a draft outline of your presentation available.
• Latest 1 week before your talk you have the slides completed and you have a rehearsal with your supervisor.
• Your talk is 45-60 minutes. It explains the main physics ideas but as well selected experimental/technical highlights which enabled this precision measurement.
• Latest 2 weeks after your presentation you hand in a 6-10 page summary about your presentation.
• Attendance of all seminars is mandatory. If you exceptionally cannot come, please let us know beforehand.
• The grade will evaluate, your understanding of your topic, the quality of your presentation and didactical quality of it, the quality of your written report and your general active participation in the seminar.
