Motivation Entscheidende Experimente legten die Grundlagen der Quantenphysik und geben weiterhin Impulse für ihre Weiterentwicklung. Intensive Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Quantenstruktur und -dynamik ermöglicht es immer noch, die Grenzen der bekannten Physik durch überschaubare Experimente zu erweitern. Die in der modernen Atomphysik realisierbare Präparation exquisit isolierter Quantensysteme sowie die unübertroffene Genauigkeit ihrer Messmethoden erlauben auch die Suche nach Physik jenseits der Standardmodelle; daraus entstandene Quantensensoren sind zu unverzichtbaren Werkzeugen der Physik und der allgemeinen Wissenschaft geworden. Das Seminar soll einen Überblick über Präzisionsexperimente mit atomaren Systemen und ihre aktuellen Anwendungen auf fundamentale Fragen der Physik geben. Or how your LCD display works? Soft matter is the physics of everyday life! Soft matter systems are characterized by a characteristic energy that is on the order of thermal energy at room temperature. They display unique physics, including fractality, phase transitions, and self-organization, as well as peculiar material properties and dynamics. We will discuss the main theoretical concepts needed to describe soft condensed matter systems like polymers, liquid crystals, membranes, complex fluids and colloids.

Beginning with the foundations of photon statistics and coherence, the seminar progresses through single-photon generation, light¿matter coupling, entanglement, and nonclassical states of light, and explore how these concepts are implemented in modern photonic platforms. Each topic is anchored by key papers that exemplify both conceptual insight and experimental technique. We derive the thermal ground state for the deconfining phase of SU(2) Yang-Mills Thermodynamics, discuss its thermal quasiparticle excitations, and compute the polarization tensor of the effective massless gauge mode. Next, we use these results under the postulate that thermal photon gases of sufficiently large spatial volumes are described by an SU(2) rather than a U(1) gauge principle. For the CMB this gives rise to a modified temperture-redshift relation with an interesting link to 3D Ising criticality. Moreover, we argue that the CMB large-angle anomalies may be traced to SU(2) screening effects and that an axial anomaly with chiral symmetry breaking at the Planck scale yields an ultralight axion particle whose temperature dependent mass essentially is determined by the SU(2) thermal ground state. The super-horizon sized condensate of these particles is a candidate for dark energy. To test the above postulate recents results of a terrestial blackbody-cavity experiment are discussed and interpreted in the context of SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics. Motivation: Nonlinear dynamics is an interdisciplinary part of mathematical physics, with applications in such diverse fields as mechanics, optics, chemistry, biology, ecology, to name but a few. Equations with nonlinearities show a much more diverse behavior than their linear counterparts, for instance self-sustained oscillations, nonlinear competition (as linear superposition does not hold anymore), chaotic dynamics and pattern formation. Pattern formation, in turn, is one of the most fascinating and intriguing phenomena in nature: it takes place in a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological systems and on very different spatial and temporal scales: examples are convection phenomena in geosciences and meteorology, but also patterns occurring in chemical reactions and bacterial colonies. In some circumstances, pattern formation is undesired, for instance the formation of spiral waves leading to cardiac arrhythmias in the heart muscle. In other contexts, pattern formation is even essential for the functioning of a system as in cell division and embryo development. Contents: The lecture will start with an introduction to nonlinear dynamics on the level of ordinary differential equations (ODEs), introducing concepts like phase space analysis, attractors, (in)stability of solutions and bifurcations, as well as nonlinear oscillations. We will then proceed to study spatio-temporal behavior, i.e. partial differential equations (PDEs) and discuss the main questions in pattern formation: when will a homogeneous state become structured, i.e. unstable towards a pattern? What are the generic scenarios/types of patterns? When are patterns stable and are they unique? What determines the wavelength / period in time / amplitude of a pattern? Importantly, a universal description of pattern dynamics exists, that is independent of the system-specific pattern formation mechanism. The method to obtain this description is called multiple-scale reduction, resulting in an amplitude equation (also called center manifold), which is nothing but the famous Ginzburg-Landau equation (Nobel Prize in Physics 2003, originally derived for superconductivity). Finally, nonlinear waves and solitons (localized waves) will be discussed. They again occur in many systems, from coupled nonlinear springs to hydrodynamic surface waves and nonlinear optics. In addition, solitons have intriguing mathematical properties that will also be discussed.

Biological cells have remarkable abilities to respond to changes in their environment. This seminar focuses on signal reception and processing from a mathematical and physical perspective. With the help of common biological model systems we will analyze qualitatively and quantitatively how cells sense and respond to their chemical and physical environment, discussing phenomena such as chemotaxis, immune response, mechanosensing and neuronal responses. With the help of kinetic equations and information theory, we will elucidate the biophysical limitations of cellular information processing in each case and introduce key concepts that have enabled cells to successfully meet these challenges. Participants are introduced to some of the standard models in the field, like zero-order ultrasensitivity, kinetic proofreading and the Monod-Wyman-Changeux model. With the help of such generic biophysical models, we will address: 1) how signals are sensed by allosteric receptors, 2) how information is processed by cellular signal transduction networks to extract biologically relevant information from such signals and 3) how cells achieve specific and robust information transfer.

This has interesting consequences for the evolution and final fates of stars. This course provides a comprehensive overview of the most relevant processes in binary star evolution, including tides, binary mass transfer, common-envelope evolution, stellar mergers, the formation of compact objects, and gravitational-wave mergers. A recap of the essentials of single-star evolution needed in this course will be given. The course consists mostly of blackboard-style lectures assisted by hands-on Python examples and multimedia presentations. Homework problems are discussed in a 1-hour tutorial immediately after the weekly 2-hour lectures.

Sie beginnt mit der klassischen Mechanik, geht über die spezielle Relativitätstheorie zur Elektrodynamik über, erläutert die Grundlagen der Quantenmechanik und der Thermodynamik, geht auf das Eichprinzip ein und schließt mit der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie ab. Das Ziel der Vorlesung ist, die wenigen grundlegenden Prinzipien und Konzepte einzuführen und an Beispielen zu entwickeln, die der modernen Physik zugrunde liegen. Dabei werden so weit wie möglich nur solche mathematischen Methoden verwendet, die auch in der Schule zur Verfügung stehen. Der Schwerpunkt liegt nicht auf der Darstellung der mathematischen Struktur der theoretischen Physik, sondern auf ihrem konzeptionellen Zusammenhalt.

Das Modul zur Einführung in die Astronomiedidaktik (ADIDA) im Rahmen des Erweiterungsfachs Astronomie für Lehramtstudierende an Gymnasien an der Universität Heidelberg wird am Haus der Astronomie durchgeführt (zu erreichen mit den Buslinien 30 und 39 oder mit der Bergbahn). Es findet immer im Sommersemester statt und beginnt vor Beginn der Vorlesungszeit im April mit einem einwöchigen Blockkurs zur Einführung jeweils von 9:00-12:45 Uhr. Der praktische Anteil findet semesterbegleitend in der Vorlesungszeit statt. Die Veranstaltung führt in die astronomische Fachdidaktik ein und behandelt unter anderem Elementarisierung und Modelle, Versuche und Messungen, Medien und Hilfsmittel, Methodik sowie die Ausarbeitung von Unterrichtseinheiten im Fach Astronomie.
