Motivation Entscheidende Experimente legten die Grundlagen der Quantenphysik und geben weiterhin Impulse für ihre Weiterentwicklung. Intensive Forschung auf dem Gebiet der Quantenstruktur und -dynamik ermöglicht es immer noch, die Grenzen der bekannten Physik durch überschaubare Experimente zu erweitern. Die in der modernen Atomphysik realisierbare Präparation exquisit isolierter Quantensysteme sowie die unübertroffene Genauigkeit ihrer Messmethoden erlauben auch die Suche nach Physik jenseits der Standardmodelle; daraus entstandene Quantensensoren sind zu unverzichtbaren Werkzeugen der Physik und der allgemeinen Wissenschaft geworden. Das Seminar soll einen Überblick über Präzisionsexperimente mit atomaren Systemen und ihre aktuellen Anwendungen auf fundamentale Fragen der Physik geben. Themenvorschläge an die Betreuer sind willkommen. Crespo López-Urrutia Anmerkungen - Die Seminarvorträge (Deutsch oder Englisch) werden in der Regel 35 Minuten plus Diskussion dauern. - Eine regelmäßige Teilnahme (>80%) und die Abhaltung eines Vortrags sind Voraussetzung für das erfolgreiche Bestehen des Kurses (PSEM, 2LP). - Ein zusätzlicher LP (UKS2) wird für die Vorbereitung einer schriftlichen Ausarbeitung des Vortrags mit Folien und inhaltlichen Angaben vergeben werden. - Die Benotung der Lehrveranstaltung wird sowohl die Vortragsvorbereitung und -durchführung als auch die aktive Teilnahme an den Diskussionen berücksichtigen. - Vier Wochen vor dem jeweiligen Termin wird von den Betreuern (crespojr@mpi-hd.mpg.de, klaus.blaum@mpi-hd.mpg.de) die für die Vorbereitung des Vortrags notwendige Literatur geschickt. In this seminar, we will cover basics concepts and themes of quantum mechanics through the discussion of historical as well as modern experiments. The topics will be inspired by a selection of problems discussed in the book "The Quantum Mechanics Solver" by Jean-Louis Badevant and Jean Dalibard. Besides the book mentioned above, research literature will be suggested for a different and/or deeper look at the topics. For each topic, one student will be responsible for studying and understanding it, and then presenting it to the seminar participants in a 20-minute talk. Prior to the presentation, two or three individual meetings will be scheduled with the lecturer to discuss the topics, the material to be presented and the structure of the presentation. After the presentation there will be a 20-minute discussion and exchange on the topics in which all students will participate. After the presentation, each student must submit a short summary of their topic based on the slides they presented.

Nowadays, an extraordinary degree of control of isolated quantum systems has been achieved across a variety of experimental platforms, including trapped ions, neutral atoms, and molecules. A large toolbox has emerged that enables fundamental research and technological advances at the forefront of modern science. Applications ranges from high precision test of fundamental theories using single particles to quantum computing on large arrays of such isolated particles, passing by quantum sensing and quantum simulation on few- to many-body systems. In this seminar we will discuss key experiments in this rapidly evolving field. Each student will prepare and deliver a 30-minute presentation on a selected topic. Special emphasis should be devoted to the underlying physical idea, the experimental techniques, and the interpretation of the results. The preparation of this presentation will be supported by two-to-three meetings with the assigned tutor, allowing each student to discuss the physical aspects of the selected topics, as well as the structure of the talk. After their presentation, each student should provide a one-page summary. Furthermore, we expect all students to attend every session and participate with active feedback and questions. The seminar takes place on Wednesdays from 09:15 to 11:00.

The topics build on one another, highlighting how experimental capabilities enabled new physics. Beginning with the foundations of photon statistics and coherence, the seminar progresses through single-photon generation, light–matter coupling, entanglement, and nonclassical states of light, and explore how these concepts are implemented in modern photonic platforms. Each topic is anchored by key papers that exemplify both conceptual insight and experimental technique. Warum war die Saturn V Rakete so riesig, obwohl man mit einem Mini-Lunar Module von der Mond wegkommen konnte? • Flugzeugflügel: wieso können Flugzeuge fliegen? • Tsunamis: Shallow water equation für die Analyse von Tsunamis. Warum (und unter welchen Umständen) sind Tsunamis so gewaltig? • Blitze (Gewitter): Wie funktionieren sie ungefähr, und wie kann man die Lautstärke berechnen. Vielleicht eine Abschätzung davon, wie viel Hagelkörner man braucht um genügend Ladungs-Separation zu machen um überhaupt Blitze zu erzeugen. • GPS-Navigation: Spezielle und allgemein-Relativistische Effekte.

Astronomical and cosmological observations require the existence of dark matter in our universe. Today, Dark Matter is generally thought to have particle nature, where the dark matter particles have relatively long lifetimes, interact gravitationally and, possibly, also  <mehr>

Astronomical and cosmological observations require the existence of dark matter in our universe. Today, Dark Matter is generally thought to have particle nature, where the dark matter particles have relatively long lifetimes, interact gravitationally and, possibly, also via the weak interaction. In the Standard Model of particle physics, only neutrinos have the correct properties, but, due to their small mass, neutrinos can only account for a small fraction of the observed Dark Matter in our universe. In extended versions of the standard model sterile neutrinos, in particular keV-sterile neutrinos can contribute as warm dark matter candidates. Light supersymmetric particles are an example for weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) which are candidates for cold darm matter. Other viable dark matter candidates are axions, which have been introduced to solve the strong CP-problem of QCD, or axion-like particles. The seminar will address the astrophysical and cosmological evidences which led to the postulation of dark matter. It will discuss the most prominent dark matter candidates and the different direct and indirect methods to search for their existence. Particular emphasis is put on the determination of neutrino masses, the search for sterile neutrinos, WIMPS and axions.

We derive the thermal ground state for the deconfining phase of SU(2) Yang-Mills Thermodynamics, discuss its thermal quasiparticle excitations, and compute the polarization tensor of the effective massless gauge mode. Next, we use these results under the postulate that thermal photon gases of sufficiently large spatial volumes are described by an SU(2) rather than a U(1) gauge principle. For the CMB this gives rise to a modified temperture-redshift relation with an interesting link to 3D Ising criticality. Moreover, we argue that the CMB large-angle anomalies may be traced to SU(2) screening effects and that an axial anomaly with chiral symmetry breaking at the Planck scale yields an ultralight axion particle whose temperature dependent mass essentially is determined by the SU(2) thermal ground state. The super-horizon sized condensate of these particles is a candidate for dark energy. To test the above postulate recents results of a terrestial blackbody-cavity experiment are discussed and interpreted in the context of SU(2) Yang-Mills thermodynamics. Biological cells have remarkable abilities to respond to changes in their environment. This seminar focuses on signal reception and processing from a mathematical and physical perspective. With the help of common biological model systems we will analyze qualitatively and quantitatively how cells sense and respond to their chemical and physical environment, discussing phenomena such as chemotaxis, immune response, mechanosensing and neuronal responses. With the help of kinetic equations and information theory, we will elucidate the biophysical limitations of cellular information processing in each case and introduce key concepts that have enabled cells to successfully meet these challenges. Participants are introduced to some of the standard models in the field, like zero-order ultrasensitivity, kinetic proofreading and the Monod-Wyman-Changeux model. With the help of such generic biophysical models, we will address: 1) how signals are sensed by allosteric receptors, 2) how information is processed by cellular signal transduction networks to extract biologically relevant information from such signals and 3) how cells achieve specific and robust information transfer.

Effective Field Theories (EFTs) furnish an elegant means to take the first step towards the next quantum field theory of nature, because they allow to include physics beyond the standard model (SM) in a model-independent way via higher dimensional operators. Beyond that, they are useful to tackle problems with separated scales, that arise in many areas of fundamental physics. EFTs allow to describe the important physics conveniently in terms of degrees of freedom that are most relevant at a given length-scale. In particular, they allow to consistently re-sum large logarithms of ratios of scales, that would otherwise spoil the perturbative expansion, and provide a modern notion of renormalization. This lecture provides a comprehensive introduction to the concept of EFTs and modern applications, including the bottom-up approach to physics beyond the SM as a guide to the next theory of nature. This course provides a comprehensive introduction to the computational techniques used to model complex many-body systems at the atomic and molecular level. Acting as a bridge between theoretical statistical mechanics and experimental results, molecular simulation has become an indispensable tool in modern physics, chemistry, and materials science. The course will be based on the textbook by Frenkel and Smit. We will cover the two main pillars of atomistic simulation: Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) methods. Students will learn the rigorous statistical mechanical foundations underlying these methods and derive, analyze, and implement the algorithms themselves. Topics Covered: - Statistical Mechanics Foundations: Review of ensembles (Microcanonical, Canonical, Grand Canonical) and their connection to thermodynamics. - Monte Carlo Methods: Importance sampling, the Metropolis algorithm, detailed balance, and trial moves for different ensembles. - Molecular Dynamics: Integration of equations of motion (Verlet, Leap-frog), force field calculation, and managing constraints. - Advanced Ensembles: Simulating at constant temperature and pressure (thermostats and barostats). - Free Energy & Phase Transitions: Thermodynamic integration, particle insertion methods (Widom), and Gibbs ensemble simulations. - Analysis: Computing structural properties (RDFs), transport coefficients (diffusion), and correlation functions.

This lecture introduces students to basic methods and techniques in computational statistics and data analysis, as widely applicable to empirical problems in the natural sciences. It provides an overview of relevant concepts and theorems in probability theory and mathematical statistics to modern deep learning techniques. The lecture is accompanied by computational exercises in Python or Matlab. It will enable students to analyze small and large data sets and interpret the results from a solid, theoretically grounded statistical perspective, to devise statistical & machine learning models of experimental situations, to infer the parameters of these models from empirical observations, and to test hypotheses about them.

Das Modul zur Einführung in die Astronomiedidaktik (ADIDA) im Rahmen des Erweiterungsfachs Astronomie für Lehramtstudierende an Gymnasien an der Universität Heidelberg wird am Haus der Astronomie durchgeführt (zu erreichen mit den Buslinien 30 und 39 oder mit der Bergbahn). Es findet immer im Sommersemester statt und beginnt vor Beginn der Vorlesungszeit im April mit einem einwöchigen Blockkurs zur Einführung jeweils von 9:30-12:30 Uhr. Der praktische Anteil findet semesterbegleitend in der Vorlesungszeit statt. Die Veranstaltung führt in die astronomische Fachdidaktik ein und behandelt unter anderem Elementarisierung und Modelle, Versuche und Messungen, Medien und Hilfsmittel, Methodik sowie die Ausarbeitung von Unterrichtseinheiten im Fach Astronomie.
