Overview
The lecture provides an overview of the theoretical foundations and experimental strategies in the search for new particles beyond the Standard Model, with a particular focus on dark matter and related phenomena. The lecture bridges theory and experiment, illustrating how the two disciplines complement and inspire each other.
It introduces the motivation for extending the Standard Model—from cosmological and astrophysical evidence for dark matter to theoretical frameworks such as axions, sterile neutrinos, and other portals to hidden sectors. On the experimental side, the course discusses the wide range of approaches to uncovering new particles, including direct and indirect dark matter searches, collider experiments, precision measurements, and astrophysical observations.
The knowledge you will acquire in this course is highly relevant if you plan to pursue research in theoretical or experimental particle or astroparticle physics. It complements lectures on Quantum Field Theory, Particle Physics and the Standard Model of Particle Physics as well as Experimental Astroparticle Physics.
Note that this lecture is directly linked to the master seminar (MVSem) of the same title. The seminar complements the lecture by highlighting certain related theories, experiments, searches, and aspects in general in more detail.
