Lecture

Lecture (4 hours/week) and exercises (2 hours/week) with homework (8 Credit Points)

Lecturer: K. Ollefs

Lecture time

starting April 14th

Tuesday, 11:15 - 13:00 h (INF 308, HS2)
Thursday, 11:15 - 13:00 h (INF 308, HS2)

Exam (written):  tba

Objectives

After completing the course the students

  • have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the fundamentals of condensed matter physics.
  • they understand the principles of formation of condensed matter and have learnt experimental methods to study structural properties. They are familiar with the reciprocal space.
  • they understand fundamental electronic models, become aquainted with bandstructure and can describe simple crystalline materials as metals, seminconductors, and insulators.
  • they can apply the basic concepts to understand optical and magnetic properties of matter and superconductivity.
  • they know the relevant experimental methods for probing structural, optical, magnetic, and electronic properties of condensed matter and can analyse the experimental results.
  • get insight into modern trends in experimental condensed matter physics.

Übungsblätter

To pass the module, active participation in the exercises and passing the exam are required. Active participation in the exercises is demonstrated by presenting solution approaches to the weekly assigned exercise problems. Willingness to present a solution can be indicated at the beginning of each exercise session. Corresponding name lists will be provided each time. Of the expected 36 subproblems (approximately 12 problem sets with 3 problems each), at least 60% must be marked. In the case of a presentation, it must be evident that a solution approach has already been developed. Written solutions may also be submitted before the respective exercise session by email to your tutor in exceptional cases. However, they generally do not count toward the final grade and will not be corrected. Voluntary submission of solutions can also be used to express a desire to clarify specific issues related to the exercise problems. So by default no handed-in solutions!
