Experimental methods in atomic and molecular physics
MVAMO3

Prof. Dr. José R. Crespo López-Urrutia

This lecture and the corresponding exercises will cover a selection of the most important advanced methods in atomic, molecular and optical physics and their applications in modern quantum physics experiments. Some of the themes are: Atom and ion trapping, laser cooling, cold quantum gases, matter interferometry, and ultrashort physics with lasers.

Weekly exercises (~10 in total) have as main task reading, understanding and discussing a recent scientific publication closely related to the lecture in course.

Each exercise sheet consists of several problems (with 10 points assigned in total), like briefly discussing of some essential aspect of the paper, sketching elements of the experimental work, and performing simple calculations and estimates related to the related atomic physics. The emphasis lies in obtaining an overview on recent advanced experimental studies in this field.

Participants have to deliver 70% of the total of problems and present and discuss in the class at least one exercise (of assigned 3 points minimum) to pass the class (4 CP).

Attendance to the online exercise class is mandatory. The lecture final grade will be based on the points obtained on the sheets and the discussed exercise.
