Lecture contents

Introduction to the theory of solid state and many particle physics. Topics discussed will be:
  • Approximations (Mean-field, dynamical mean-field, ligand field, crystal field) and models
  • Second quantisation
  • Free electron model, tight binding, Green's functions and response functions
  • Impurity scattering, surface states and topology
  • Weakly interacting electrons and the Hartree-Fock approximation
  • Correlations, Mott insulators, Atomic physics and magnetism
  • Many particle Green's functions and self energy
