Time & Location:
Thursday 16:15-18:00h, room: conference room at PI (INF 226 - gold box)
We will meet on April 18th the first time.
If you are intrested in a early seminar talk please contact us in advance
Lecturer:
Sebastian Bachmann (SB: bachmann@physi.uni-heidelberg.de)
Ulrich Schmidt (US: uschmidt@physi.uni-heidelberg.de)
The topic of the seminar are precision measurements in particle physics. Find below a list of possible topics. If you are interested in one of them and like to give your presentation at an early date in the semester, you can contact us at any time during the semester break. Topics are distributed on first come first serve basis. Other topics are wellcome. Feel free to send us proposals (should not be related to you bachelor thesis or early seminiar talk you gave).
Proposal for Topics
- Measurement of neutrino oscillation
- Measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon (g-2)μ
- Measurement of neutrino coherent scattering
- Neutrino mass measurement at the KATRIN experiment
- Measurement of the Weinberg angle sin thetaw
- Measurement of Bs oscillation at LHCb
- The neutron lifetime puzzle
- Test of graviation at small scales (torsion pendulum)
- Measurement of electron EDM
- Measurement of neutron EDM
- Measurement of the EDM of a diamagnetic nucleus (Hg-199, Xe 129)
- Search for neutrinoless double beta decay (0ν2β)
- Measurement of the Z mass and width at LEP
- Measurement of the free neutron Beta-decay
- Search for dark matter with the AMS-experiment
- Measurement of the Fermi constant
- NA62: Search for new physics in the decay K+ -> π+νν
Prerequisits and Conditions
- You have followed the Particle Physics lecture
- For the preparation of your talk, search of suitable material (papers etc.). In case you have questions please contact your superviser.
- Latest 3 weeks before your talk you arrange for a meeting with your supervisor to discuss the material, at this time you should have already a draft outline of your presentation available.
- Latest 1 week before your talk you have the slides completed and you have a rehearsal with your supervisor.
- Your talk is 45-60 minutes. It explains the main physics ideas but as well selected experimental/technical highlights which enabled this precision measurement.
- Latest 2 weeks after your presentation you hand in a 6-10 page summary about your presentation.
- Attendance of all seminars is mandatory. If you exceptionally cannot come, please let us know beforehand.
- The grade will evaluate, your understanding of your topic, the quality of your presentation and didactical quality of it, the quality of your written report and your general active participation in the seminar.
Practice groups
- Group Standardgruppe (Sebastian Bachmann, Ulrich Schmidt)
