Later Dates: Student presentations on Gaia Science

In order to obtain the 6 credit points students must give a presentation and write a summary on the presentation and topic (about 10 pages).

Some information about the Gaia mission:

Mandatory for all: Read the DR2 overview paper: 2018arXiv180409365G and the Astrometry paper: 2018arXiv180409366L

Your presentation should have a lenght of 30 minutes plus 15 minutes of discussion.

Please choose 3 topics covered by the Gaia DR2 papers (first, second, and third choice) and send you suggestion to jordan@ari.uni-heidelberg.de with CC to bastian@ari.uni-heidelberg.de

We will send around a doodle poll in order to choose dates for the seminar topics (at the end of June). Also contact your advisor (SJ or UB) about two weeks before your talk and present us a draft or your ideas what you want to talk about.

  • The Seminar topics (12.6.2018):

9:15, Valentin Hanft: Hyper velocity stars with focus on three Hypervelocity White Dwarfs in Gaia DR2 (Shen et al.), Adviser: Stefan Jordan

10:00, Nicolas Hernandez: A Gaia DR2 view of the Open Cluster population in the Milky Way (Cantat-Gaudin et al.): Adviser: Ulrich Bastian

11:00 Kai Roth:  R. P. van der Marel et al., 'First Gaia Dynamics of the Andromeda System: DR2 Proper Motions Orbits, and Rotation of M31 and M33', Adviser: Ulrich Bastian

11:45 Nico Winkel: Riess et al. (2018) 'Milky Way Cepheid Standards for Measuring Cosmic Distances and Application to Gaia DR2: Implications for the Hubble Constant', Adviser: Stefan Jordan

Please send the summaries to jordan@ari.uni-heidelberg.de and bastian@ari.uni-heidelberg.de.
